What each Premier League defence concedes

Clean sheet probability tells you how likely a shutout is. This tells you what a defence actually gives up: shots from the six-yard box, the central penalty area, wide in the box, the edge and long range, plus headers faced and set-piece expected goals. Two defences can face the same number of shots and be nothing alike.

2025/26 season, per match. This covers the 17 clubs that played in the Premier League last season and are still in it. Coventry, Hull and Ipswich came up from the Championship, so there is no Premier League shot data for them yet and they are not in the table. Burnley, West Ham and Wolverhampton Wanderers are in last season's data but went down, so they are left out.

Penalties are counted separately and left out of the zone columns, because they say nothing about defensive shape.

ArsenalFewest expected goals conceded: 0.91 per match
EvertonMost headers faced: 2.55 per match
EvertonMost central-box shots faced: 5.16 per match

These 17 defences, sorted by expected goals conceded

Why this matters for FPL: a defence that faces a lot of headers is a set-piece risk, so its clean sheet is fragile even against weak opponents. A defence that concedes mostly from long range is giving up volume without quality, and its goalkeeper is a save-points candidate. These come from shot-level data with its own expected-goals model, so the numbers are not Opta's and we do not call them that.
